Emerald Arborvitae

Emerald arborvitae is our most requested conifer for hedges, because it keeps a narrow conical shape with almost no pruning and does not brown over winter the way cheaper varieties do. It grows in full sun or partial shade and is not picky about soil, it just does not like a permanently waterlogged spot. For a hedge, we recommend planting every 60 to 80 centimeters, so the plants grow together into a solid wall while still keeping enough room to fill out. We plant container plants nearly year round outside of frost; after planting, water regularly during the first year, especially in a dry summer.
